Custom business software · Naples · since 2005

There's a simpler way to do what you already do.

We build custom business software for companies that stopped bending themselves around off-the-shelf programs. We make websites that get you found, and the networks that keep it all running. Twenty years of it, from Naples.

We answer the phone ourselves.

Where we come from

We come from print.

Bangherang was not born in a garage. It was born inside iTheritage, a Neapolitan publisher of travel guides. Not trivia: it is why one of our pages reads well and another does not.

Our teacher taught us, thirty years at Mondadori behind him. One thing only, but a good one: the rules of publishing did not change because a screen arrived. A hierarchy. Space that breathes. A line of the right length.

Before him we made wide, sprawling websites like everyone else. After, we stopped filling and started laying out: you can see it in the work, and on this page too.

2005

Travel guides

We start inside a publishing house, bringing the rules of print to the web.

2011

The first systems

From websites to the programs that run companies. Some of those clients are still with us.

Today

Software, sites and networks

Seven people in Naples. And the same starting idea: make business simpler.

What we do

Three trades, under one roof.

People who write software do not climb ladders to mount access points. People who pull cable have never seen an electronic invoice. You know how that ends: two suppliers blaming each other, and you in the middle. We do the whole loop.

Custom business software

A program cut to fit how you work. Not the other way round: you should not have to learn one built for somebody else.

  • Orders, stock, invoices
  • Clients and quotes
  • Bookings and enrolments
  • Tills and printers connected

Websites that bring clients

A still shopfront is no use. You need a site that comes up on Google when someone searches for what you do, right now, on a phone.

  • Found on Google
  • Fast on a phone too
  • Bookings and payments
  • Campaigns, if needed

Networks and connections

The warehouse covered end to end, the office properly connected, and internet where they swear it will not reach.

  • Wi-Fi that covers everything
  • Dedicated fibre
  • Satellite links
  • Servers and business email
The part you see

Layout first. Code after.

A business system is not pretty or ugly: it is clear or confusing. The difference is not the colour of the button — it is having decided what the person opening that screen at seven in the morning needs to read first.

That is why design here does not arrive at the end. It is the first move, and it comes from print: the same rules that served a travel guide serve a warehouse screen.

And when it is needed off the screen too, we do that: a logo, a catalogue, a price list, a sign, a label. The same tools publishing uses, in the hands of people who use them for a living.

Logos and identity
The mark, the colours, the typefaces, and the rules for using them without spoiling them.
Print
Catalogues, price lists, data sheets, brochures. Laid out, not filled.
Interfaces
The screens of your system, drawn before they are written.
Illustration and photo
Technical drawings, retouching, preparing images for print and for the web.

It is why one of our systems and one of our websites look made by the same hand: they are.

What we don't do

We don't do social media. On purpose.

Running social media properly is a full-time trade: people living in it daily, answering comments at nine in the evening. We do something else, and we would rather do it well.

Anyone listing ten services is credible in none of them. We do three, and we have done them for twenty years.

But we do not leave you alone: we work with agencies who do social for a living, and we introduce you. You find the right person already there.

Better to be the only choice for one thing than a possible choice for ten.

A Fruit Italy truck: they run on software we built
How we work

The first week we write nothing.

We come and watch. Which spreadsheets really circulate, what ends up on a sticky note, where two hours go every Tuesday morning. Companies do not describe themselves in meetings: you see them by working.

Then we build one piece at a time, and each goes straight into use. Be wrong while it is cheap, not eight months in when it is expensive.

If the problem cannot be solved with software, we tell you before you spend.

before touching money, a dry run
# Nothing starts blind: first we look at
# what WOULD have happened.

dry run nothing written, just looking
  documents 1,284 ready
to review 3 invalid VAT numbers

Stopping. Fix the 3, then we go.

Anything touching invoices, stock or money runs empty first. It costs a minute and it has saved us from real trouble.

Even where they swear it will not reach.

The finest software in the world is worthless if the Wi-Fi drops at the back of the warehouse. That part we do ourselves, with our hands and a ladder.

Servers and systems

Production machines run by us: configuration, updates, background queues, monitoring, verified backups. Not rented and forgotten.

Business email

Our own mail server, with SPF, DKIM and DMARC set up properly. Because an invoice that lands in spam is an invoice that does not get paid.

DNS and edge protection

Domains, certificates and traffic behind Cloudflare: filtering on unusual traffic, access rules, protection from automated attacks.

Security written into the code

Per-role permissions on every field, a record of who changed what, external content sandboxed, rate limits on login attempts, credentials kept out of the source.

Networks and on-site hardware

Cabling, equipment, warehouse printers and till devices connected to the system. Even when they sit behind the warehouse router.

Continuity

One number to call. Whoever wrote the software is the same person who knows where the log file is at eight in the evening.

The studio

We are few. That is the point.

Eight of us, based in Naples. No switchboard, no ticket, no three desks to pass. You call, and the person who wrote that software answers.

We do not take on more work than we can follow. It is why some clients have been with us for fifteen years, and also why we leave some things to others.

The Tre Golfi Regatta in the bay of Naples: entries, website and event network
GS Giampiero Founder · senior developer

Curious by trade. Networks, servers, engines, typography: anything with a logic inside that can be taken apart. He started with networks and never stopped, but what he really cares about is walking into a company and understanding how it works. He answers the phone even when he probably shouldn't.

ES Ernesto Co-founder · senior developer

The studio's name is his fault, and we are grateful. Pedantic to the point of exhaustion: he reads things three times, and the third time always finds something. Unbearable to listen to and essential to have.

MT Matteo Developer

He keeps running the systems that have run for years. Not the work people talk about at conferences. It is what separates a client who stays from one who leaves.

MC Marcello Junior developer

No exercises: here you learn on code somebody actually uses, with someone more experienced reading over it. Slower at first, much faster afterwards.

DL Daniele Testing

He has the rare gift of using a program the way nobody intended. He clicks where you shouldn't, types what nobody would, and finds things sitting there for months. Better him than a client.

DG Diego Analyst

He stands between the people who do the work and the people who write the code, which is exactly where projects fail. He asks many questions, until he is sure he has understood.

AP Anna Google campaigns

She brings the right people in, and more importantly stops the wrong ones: half the job, and the half nobody mentions. She also tells us when something we wrote makes no sense.

AN Antonio Designer

He comes from print and it shows. He draws logos, lays out catalogues, prepares screens before anyone writes them. He notices two lines are not aligned when nobody else had — and cannot leave them that way.

Who works on your project

Always the same people. That is the whole secret.

We have worked together for years, on the same projects, with the same people. Nobody gets swapped out halfway, and nobody inherits a job someone else started without knowing why it was built that way.

A project gets whoever it actually needs: if there is drawing to do, the designer is there; if there is a ladder to climb and an access point to mount, the person who does that for a living is there. Each to their trade, all on the same job.

Whoever answers the phone knows where your project stands without asking around. Not because we coordinate well: because there are few of us and we see each other every day.

And if a job needs a skill we do not have, we say so. We do not improvise it.

A question we always get

So what does Bangherang mean?

We get asked at every single meeting, without fail. And every time the name comes back mangled a new way: Bangherangh, Bengherang, Bangaran, Boomerang. We have heard so many that by now we root for the most creative one.

It comes from Peter Pan. It is the war cry of the lost boys — the ones who never grow up and go adventuring anyway. The idea was Ernesto's, who founded the studio together with Giampiero.

It sounds like a choice made by kids, and partly it is. But after twenty years of business systems, servers and cable to pull, that name is the one thing that reminds us daily not to take ourselves too seriously. The work, yes. Us, no.

And it is spelled with an h. We have given up: call us whatever comes out.

Translation

The words you will hear, in plain English.

Our trade uses terms that mean nothing from outside. Here they are, with what they actually mean.

CRM
The place where all your clients live: who they are, what they asked, who called them and when. Instead of three address books and a notepad.
ERP
The program that holds orders, stock and invoices together. Write something once, it updates everywhere.
API
How two programs talk to each other on their own. So the system sends the invoice without anyone retyping it.
Cloud
The program lives on a machine of ours, always on, not on somebody's laptop. You get in from anywhere and we handle the backups.
Backup
A safety copy. One that actually exists, and that somebody has tried restoring at least once: without that test it is only a hope.
Access point
The Wi-Fi aerials. Placed where they are needed, not where convenient: first you measure where the signal drops, then you install.
SEO
The work that makes your site come up on Google when someone searches for what you do. Not magic: writing well, and being readable by machines.
Behind the scenes

What happens while you sleep.

Every night the systems we look after do the boring things by themselves: data lines up, figures get checked, backups are taken.

If something is off, we know before you do. That is the difference between catching it on Tuesday and catching it at month end.

// what everyone asks

Before you ask.

How much does custom business software cost?
Custom software for a small company usually starts from a few thousand euros for the first working module, and grows from there. We build the part that saves the most time first, put it into use straight away, and decide whether to continue based on the results. The first meeting is free and is about whether it is worth doing at all. We are based in Naples and work across Italy.
Custom software or an off-the-shelf program?
Custom is worth it when the way your company works is particular and a standard program would force you to change it. Off-the-shelf is worth it when it already covers 90 per cent of what you need: in that case we say so, because there is no sense paying to rebuild what exists.
How long does it take?
The first usable piece usually in four to eight weeks, then it grows module by module. We do not do projects that reveal themselves only after eight months: each piece goes into use as soon as it is ready, so corrections stay cheap.
Do you build websites too?
Yes. Company websites, online shops, sites with bookings and payments, and the work to rank on Google. We are a Naples studio that came out of publishing: our pages are laid out by the rules of print, not filled up.
Do you do company networks and Wi-Fi?
Yes, and it is half of what we do. Access points for warehouses, clubs, hotels and building sites; dedicated fibre and leased lines; Starlink satellite links where no line reaches. Also servers, business email and backups. Software is worthless if the Wi-Fi drops at the back of the warehouse.
Do you connect tills and printers?
Yes. Cash registers, kitchen order printers, warehouse label printers and barcode scanners get connected to the software, so nothing has to be retyped on a separate sheet.
Do you handle social media?
No, and it is not a gap: it is a choice. Running social media properly is a full-time trade, and we do something else — business software, websites and networks — and have done for twenty years. But we work with Naples agencies who do social for a living, and we introduce you ourselves: whoever comes to Bangherang finds the right person already there.
Why not offer everything like other agencies?
Because anyone listing ten services is credible in none of them. We chose three — custom business software, websites and company networks — and have worked on those from Naples since 2005. For the rest we have trusted people we pass the work to, while remaining your single point of contact.
If I also need marketing, do I have to look elsewhere?
No, we put you in touch with the right people. In house we run Google campaigns and search positioning; for social media and communications we work with partner agencies in Naples we have collaborated with for years. You talk to us, and we handle the coordination.
Do you only work in Naples?
The studio is in Naples, in via Vincenzo Arangio Ruiz. Our clients are across Italy: software work is done remotely, while for networks and installations we travel.
Does it work on a phone?
Yes. Everything we build works on computer, tablet and phone from the same address with the same login. No apps to download, no cut-down versions.
Who are you and how long have you been going?
Bangherang Studio is in Naples and has been working since 2005. We are seven: four developers, an analyst, someone who finds the faults and someone who runs the Google campaigns. We were born inside iTheritage, a Neapolitan publisher of travel guides, and that is where our approach to layout comes from.
What happens after the software is ready?
We stay. Go-live is the beginning, not the end: we fix what only shows up in daily use, add what turns out to be needed, and the person who answers the phone is the person who wrote the code. Some clients have been with us for fifteen years.
Do you handle electronic invoicing?
Yes, our systems generate and submit Italian electronic invoices and handle the receipts. Anything touching invoices or money always runs as a dry run first, so you see what would have happened before it does.
How do we start?
With a call or a WhatsApp message to +39 351 240 7196. Then we come and watch how you work: the first week we write nothing. Only then do we decide what, if anything, to build.
// the next story

And you? What story can we start writing?

Tell us what is not working in the way you work now. The first meeting is about whether it is worth doing anything at all: sometimes the honest answer is no, and we say so.
