A regatta is a management system

4 min read

For years we have built the entry platform and digital race office for the Tre Golfi Sailing Week and C.R.V. Italia. What goes on behind a regatta, from the entry form to the crew app.

From the quayside, a regatta is boats, wind and a start line. From the race office, it is a management system: entries, payments, documents, notices and results, in two languages, with deadlines that do not move.

We know because for years we have built the entry platform and digital race office for the Tre Golfi Sailing Week, which includes the Regata dei Tre Golfi, the ORC Mediterranean Championship and the IMA Maxi European Championship, and for C.R.V. Italia in Naples.

We also built the website for the North Sails Cup, the event for Maxis, Superyachts, J-Class and 12 Metres taking place in summer 2027 in the Gulf of Naples, during the America's Cup.

What the platform does

A form for every class

Each class has its own entry form, with the fields that class needs, in Italian and English. Plenty of crews come from abroad, and language should not trip them up at the first step.

Owners have their own account. The following year they find their boat already registered and do not start from scratch.

Payments with receipts

Entrants pay by card or bank transfer, and either way there is a receipt. The payment stays attached to the entry, in the same place the race office manages it.

Entry list, notices, results

The entry list is public. Jury notices and results are published from the same panel, and competitors find them where they expect them.

An app on the crew's phones

The platform installs on a phone like an app. Anyone who wants to can turn on notifications and receive notices and alerts; anyone who would rather not receives nothing.

Country codes, finally consistent

It sounds like a detail, but for years a jumble of country codes had caused problems. The platform now uses World Sailing's MNA codes, those of the national sailing authorities, falling back to three-letter ISO codes where none exists.

The MMSI field

Every boat has an MMSI field, the code that identifies a vessel at sea in radio communications.

Why we are telling you this

Bespoke software is our trade, and a regatta is a textbook case. Lots of people, precise rules and no room for error on the day of the start.

A generic online entry form collects names and payments, and stops there. It has no idea what a class is, does not recognise the owner coming back the following year, and has never heard of MNA codes. Everything it misses lands on the race office's desk, to be patched up by hand in spreadsheets and email chains during the busiest days of the year.

Behind every feature listed here is a request that came from the race office during a real edition. We wrote the code alongside the people who handle the entries, and it shows in the details.

What we built for these events we now offer to other clubs as a turnkey package: entry platform, payments, notices, results and a crew app.

If you are organising a regatta and would like to talk it through, drop us a line.
